Forestry Hose: Type I vs. Type II
Forestry / Wildland hose is used for firefighting in areas with grass, brush, and trees, where lightweight hose is needed to maneuver over steep or rough terrain. Hoses must be lightweight, pack well, and have low friction loss. Forestry hose couplings also have fewer rocker lugs than standard couplings, to assist in preventing snags in an outdoor environment.
Type I Forestry Wildland hose
While some versions are reasonably durable, extended durability is not the primary design criteria. Type I Forestry hose is lightweight, and designed for maximum portability. This is highly valued in the Wildland firefighting arena. Our Type I hose has a TPU liner for less friction loss, less weight, and flatter packing/storage. It is white hose without any extra color-coating, so it can be less durable when dragging. It is also well suited for both Forest Service firefighting and home protection, but should only be reserved for use in the event of an emergency.
Type II Forestry Wildland hose
Type II Forestry hose is a quality single jacket hose that combines reasonable weight with a color-coating that provides maximum durability (for a single jacket hose). In addition to Wildland firefighting use, Type II hose makes for excellent home protection fire hose that can also be used for occasional applications around the home, on the farm, etc. Addition of color-coating increases hose durability, when compared to untreated, colorless hoses.
Sizes
Per Forest Service Specification 5100-187c, 1 1/2” Forestry Wildland hoses have couplings with NH / NST threads, while 1” Forestry Wildland hoses have couplings with NPSH threads. See our Adapter Guide for additional thread information and specs. All our Made in USA Type I and Type II Forestry hose meets or exceeds both NFPA and FSS 5100-187c standards, and is made to handle service pressure up to 300 psi.
